Why this play now?

“I’m not a particularly optimistic person, I try to be a realist, but more often than not dip into pessimism (and sometimes even have a good long swim in it). The truth is it takes more energy, imagination, and strength to imagine better, but we need to. As hard as it is, we need to dare to dream.”

— Wren Brian, on her motivation for writing “Now”

When we discuss climate justice, it is so easy to fall into a hopeless mindset. What have we done to the world? How is the environment deteriorating? As Brian points out, it is much easier to dwell on the past, on our faults and our mistakes, than it is to work towards the future. What can we do for the world? We chose to highlight this play so that we can dream. The future is only what we make of it, and Now chooses to make it into something beautiful. With this reading, we choose to look forward and dream, rather than look back in despair.
